After a long wait 4.6 release is finally ready

The specific updates in this release includes:

Server Side Mail Filter configuration for each user

Updated Spam Configuration for users

Updated Spam learning, no need to use separate learn mailboxes anymore (Old spam boxes will be deleted during upgrade)

Milter type Antivirus and unwanted content type configuration

Updated Greylist function (greylisting is now enabled on default) with flexible configuration

OpenBSD 4.6 base OS + all updated base packages (postfix, dovecot, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, ...)

Roundcube 0.3.1 Webmail + extensions

Nginx webserver instead of Apache - faster and less memory usage

Use TLS when sending emails if it's supported by the receiving mailserver

Allow "-" in usernames and use "+" for address expansion instead (postfix default)

A couple of things to note:

The Spam/Detected, Spam/LearnAsSpam and Spam/LearnAsNoSpam folders will be deleted. In the 4.6 system only the Spam folder is used.

To learn spam and no-spam in 4.6, simply move spam into the Spam folder. To learn no-spam, move the non-spam mail from the Spam folder out of the Spam folder. Much simpler.

with the rrdmon-poll problem: it looks like your clock went backwards? Looking at the timestamp (date -r 1261563002) it should probably stop about now. You would have gotten this every 5 minutes.

All fine . No errors on 4.6.6 . Please if it is not troublesome to add detailed logs for what gets greylisted and whitelisted in the webadmin interface like on version 4.5 . It was very handy and it is missing now . Also a setting for greylisting Time would be very usefull for newbies like me

Well, since they are being picky, I think it's only fair to be picky back. SSL never happens on port 25, security on port 25 is TLS only, using the STARTTLS command (and it will show the STARTTLS banner when using the ehlo command). The mailserver will therefore not display an SSL banner on port 25 since it doesn't allow SSL (only TLS). SSL happens on the smtps port 465 (in general and on the mailserver).

If you want to see for yourself, use openssl and run: openssl s_client -connect _mailserverip_:25 -starttls smtp

It's not uncommon that these services report the wrong thing unfortunately. The 4.5 mailserver with greylisting turned on used to be reported as an open relay.

please run the following on the command line:

touch /etc/mail/smtpd.conf

Nikolas,

No, it is not safe to upgrade. If you fiddle with the installed packages, and try to upgrade something yourself, you will break things and you are on your own. If you actually look at the list, most of the "outdated" ports are actually newer than the ones you want to install. There are also several ports that have patched manually, outside of the ports tree. Things will break if you attempt this, and the only way to clean it up will be to reinstall the Mailserver on a new system and copy your mails across.

Cheers

OK, my open issues:

1. I am receiving 3-4 output emails/night. One is daily insecurity that /etc/mail/smtpd.conf is missing. One is a daily that is blank, another is a daily that has the right data. The final output email is from cron that the job finished with a null message body.

2. The dashboard indicates that SpamAssassin has not been updated since July 20, 2009. Is that correct?

3. I only half understand the spam filtering capability. When mail is put into the Spam folder, how often is it learned, and how often is that folder purged? Also, vice versa for mail from the Spam folder to the Inbox - how often is that learned?

Thanks, this is great progress, and the global spam level setting is terrific!

      <post>

Hi guys, 4.6.7 has been released with a couple of fixes:

Pop3 got disabled when the hostname changed

Cleaned up the daily output messages.

Force loading of the spamd language detection module.

Here's comments around some of the questions as well:

Thomas:

Output Emails: please upgrade to 4.6.7.

Spamassassin not updated since July: Yes, this is correct. The Mailserver uses SA v3.2.5 which is the latest stable release of SpamAssassin. The SpamAssassin team has since been focused on the development of SA 3.3 which is currently in beta and we're not likely to see any updates of new SpamAssassin rules until v3.3 has been released. Luckily, spam is not like viruses and does not need it's signatures to updated nearly as often to still offer effective protection (the nature of spam doesn't really change that much).

Spam learning: If a message is detected as Spam and automatically placed in the Spam folder (actually, if it has the X-Spam-Flag set in the mail header) it won't be learned as spam as it has already been accurately detected. When you move a message from any mailbox except the Trash into the Spam folder, it will be automatically handed to the spam learning system to learn that this is spam message. If you move a message from the Spam folder into any other folder than the Trash, it will automatically learn that this was not a spam message. These learnings will happen once for each message moved either in or out of the Spam folder and will happen as soon as the message is moved. Mails in the Spam, and the Trash folder, will automatically be deleted after 30 days.

Volker:

The upgrade path from 4.4 is to go through 4.5. Use the System -> Upgrade function and it will list an upgrade to 4.5. When you have upgraded to 4.5, you can look in System -> Upgrade and it will now list 4.6 as an available upgrade.

Nikolas:

Spam config: The Spam config has been updated in 4.6.7 to make sure that the language parsing module has been loaded.

Autolearn of emails: The Autolearn will happen automatically if Spamassassin thinks that it's safe to autolearn. This means that it needs a spam score of at least 12 to trigger the autolearn for spam, and below a score of 0.1 to autolearn as not spam (ham). Please see: http://spamassassin.apache.org/full/3.2.x/doc/Mail_SpamAssassin_Plugin_AutoLearnThreshold.html for more info.

Cron output, has been cleaned up in 4.6.7.

The webinterface to the greylist won't be implemented right now, you will have to look in /var/db/milter-greylist/greylist.db (which is really a plain text file) to see what has been greylisted. The greylist system is completely different from the previous one and therefore the previous webinterface can't be reused at all unfortunately.

Yes, you can just enable pop3 and pop3s, or install 4.6.7 and change the hostname (in the webadmin interface) to something else, and then change it back, to trigger the change.

Hi guys,

Nikolas,

Please see this post: http://www.irbs.net/internet/postfix/0802/0373.html where Wietse (the developer of Postfix) explains the "lost connection after DATA" message. Basically it means that the recipient (rcpt to) was rejected, most likely because it was typed incorrectly, or it was a spammer trying to guess the recipient address.

A warning is not a bug. Please refer to this discussion on the implementation of TCP_MAXSEG: http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/postfix/2007-07/1207.html

The mailserver uses the default max message size for spamassassin. The default is the best option for most situations. Almost all spam messages are small because the practicality of sending large messages to thousands of recipients is a lot lower, and takes a lot longer, than sending small messages. Spamassassin gets called using spamc in /usr/local/sbin/spamfilter, please feel free to adjust the command line parameters if in your experience and testing, your specific spam profile does not fit the generic. If you want to discuss what the default max message size should be, that is much better directed towards to spamassassin development mailing list.

Henrik,

With the 0.0.0.0 address, it seems, from having a brief look at the milter-greylist code (line 3141 of milter-greylist.c (milter-greylist 4.2.3)) that the ip address was never given to milter-greylist by postfix and it never bothered looking it up itself, since it was going to succeed anyway with SMTP AUTH. Instead of leaving the address field empty, it set it to 0.0.0.0.

With the dashboard update. There may be a problem with the blocked mail graph, but I can't reproduce the problem with the CPU, MEM, SWAP or delivered mail graphs. Can you please restart the server and see if that fixes the problem?

Hi Andy,

yes, the mailserver now does what most people expect it to. In the previous version the mail was still scanned but no headers where inserted unless the recipient was a local users, which was mostly annoying as spam filtering wouldn't work for forwardings at all. In the new version, headers are inserted not just to local users making it possible to filter spam effectively on forwarded email address as well.

Hi guys and happy new year,

First, the 20XX bug has indeed been solved in the latest spamassassin update which was release a couple of days ago so by now all installations should have the latest signatures.

And with Pop3 - pop3 can only read the Inbox. This is not something specific to the Dovecot implementation or the Mailserver configuration. Pop3 is really a very old protocol that should have died many years ago.

With Pop3 and the lack of folder support:

You won't be able to see anything that has been classified as Spam.

Spam learning doesn't work.

Spam declassification doesn't work.

The view in the webmail differs as the webmail uses imap.

At some point in the future it will be disabled in the Mailserver as a default enabled protocol as there are no real benefits to use Pop3 and only drawbacks. Please see http://docs.allardsoft.com/mailserver/client_configuration for information on supported client configurations.

Ok, but at least (I hope) i found solution in this case.

If we talk about POP3 and SPAM msgs. I can fix it by using filters (as i understand - they are server- based?) . Then i can adapt them to be routed to Inbox folder, by disable Spam rule.

One more thing. about greylisting. I can't find exact solution to disable it. I i understand correctly then to disable it i have to create another blank whitelisting rule with Match Destination Email: /.*/ But incoming mails still been delayed.

How can i create a greylist rule to check envelope sender(not mailserver reverse)? For example i need to automatically allow my country domains to send mails [anyone@anydomain.lv]

Is this a right place to asks such questions? :).

PS. btw with update 4.6.8 i like mailserver product almost two times more :) thx.

With the spam rule, absolutely, if you disabled/delete the spam rule - all emails will be delivered to the inbox.

It sounds like you should be able to write a greylisting rule to

whitelist from /.*@.*\.lv/

This will check against the envelope mail from command only - it won't do any reverse lookup, so it's obviously trivial to spoof the from address with this setup.

And I agree, I think that 4.6 has become a very nice release. Time to look ahead to 4.7: http://help.allardsoft.com/forums/51200/entries/94454 :-)

Hi guys, v4.6.9 has just been released with a couple of updates:

It's now possible to see in the webadmin interface what has been greylisted and whitelisted (Mailserver -> Greylist -> Whitelisted)

The Spamassassin 2010 bug does no longer rely on the spamassassin update. This should help on new installations.

Cleaned up the ISO installation which should be much smoother now, with the recommended disk size automatically configured by default.

Hi guys, v4.6.9 has just been released with a couple of fixes:

The autowhitelisting function in the greylisting now uses ip address only for subsequent connections rather than ip address, sender email and sender ip address.

Added log rotation of the database log.

Development of version 1.3 is well under way with some very nice additions. On the user interface side of things,

the send page has been updated to be even cleaner than before.

The configuration pages are currently been worked on with the branding page shown in the screenshot below.

It'll be easier to change the branding with easily changeable background images for header and footer.

In the background there's been some significant changes as well:

The flash upload component has been removed. This will allow far larger uploads. See the attached screenshots for sending a 6Gb file.

Apache has been replaced with nginx. This will speed things up in general and reduce memory usage.

Some features will also be removed/simplified:

Remote authentication will be LDAP only. This is what everyone wants anyway. It'll be revamped so that there's a testing mechanism at the configurations page to test the LDAP authentication.

Support Internet Explorer 6 and before will end. IE6 cannot handle larger files than 4Gb. It will simply roll over and a 4.1Gb file will be downloaded as a 0.1Gb file. There will be a warning if you're using IE6 but the system won't prevent you from using it.

Please open a support case if you want to be part of the beta testing.

Looking forward to releasing this in a few weeks time (hopefully).

Please let me explain.....

Our company deals with sensitive data as do many however the network has mandatory two factor authentication enforced on all active directory domain controllers. Products that authenticate to active directory must have a dedicated plug-in to communicate with the two factor appliance. Where this is not possible the device must authenticate against another trusted device, allow pass-through authentication or can be placed as an exemption to two factor authentication. The latter option is not possible for active directory domain controllers.

IMAP is used to authenticate against MS exchange which has its own dedicated plug-in for OWA. By authentication against this device it removes the need to have a dedicated plug-in for the filetransfer appliance.
